Life Sketch of Mrs. Choong Yuet Ping (1930-2026)
Mrs. Choong Yuet Ping was born in Hong Kong on December 19, 1930, with her ancestral home in Dongguan of Guangdong Province. She lost her father at a young age, was raised solely by her mother, and was the only daughter in the family. Since she was a weakly child and went through the occupation of Hong Kong by the Japanese army, she experienced suspension of classes and school transfers. Ultimately, she completed her junior high school education. She also studied tailoring under a master. Later, she continued her studies at night school, where she met her upperclassman Choong Meng Hai. She ran a bookstore with him and several like-minded classmates and served as a clerk there.
In 1958, Yuet Ping and Meng Hai got married. Their marriage lasted for 55 years. They have 5 children, namely, Annie, Vivian, Rosanna, Margaret, and Kwok Keung (KK), 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
After marriage, they ran a small grocery store and worked together to raise their kids. Although they were originally atheists, they chose to send their children to Christian schools, believing that in this way the children would not turn out badly. While managing the store, Yuet Ping supervised their children’s studies. Their parenting style was democratic. Not only would they let their son and daughters make their own choices for their lives, but they also would try their best to support them and would not expect anything in return.
In 1987, Mr. and Mrs. Choong immigrated to Canada and began their retirement life. Aside from helping to take care of their two grandsons, they joined KK and attended Sunday services at the Chinese Gospel Church in downtown Toronto. Through the class for seekers, they got to know the triune God and made the decision to believe in the Lord. They received baptism on August 27, 1989. From 1990, they joined the Grace Chinese Gospel Church of North York, actively participating in Sunday services, fellowship, and small group meetings etc. Since 1996, they served in Hebron Fellowship for the elderly, sharing love and encouragement with group members.
In May 2013, Yuet Ping’s beloved husband passed away. She had lived alone for 10 years but had not felt lonely, for the eldest daughter and the youngest son and their families living in Toronto visited and took care of her from time to time. The other three daughters and their families living overseas also visited every year for the family reunion. In addition to keep on participating in church meetings, she diligently read the Bible and memorized verses at home. At the same time, she took the initiative to interact with her elderly neighbors and exercised regularly with them in the morning and evening. She also enjoyed participating in activities at the elderly center, especially painting, weaving, and making flowers with stockings.
In mid-2023, Mrs. Choong was admitted to a nursing home because she had difficulty taking care of herself. Despite her physical limitations, she still actively participated in various activities in the nursing home and eagerly established friendly relationships with the staff and residents there. Every evening, she enjoyed online fellowship with her children for about an hour, chatting and praying for each other.
In the past six months, she had been in and out of the hospital frequently. However, during that period, she had amazing experiences of encountering Jesus and conversing with Him intimately. Although physically she was weakening, her soul was renewed day by day, for Jesus Christ guided and accompanied her in her mission of spreading the gospel in the nursing home and among unbelieving family members. In February of this year, she heard Jesus say, "You can go to the heavenly home now!" In the morning of March 4, Yuet Ping rested in peace in the arms of the Lord at the age of 95.
