"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue."
— Proverbs 31:26
It is with hearts full of love and gratitude that we celebrate the life of Wai Yee (Vivian) Chang, a devoted teacher, cherished mother and grandmother, faithful wife, and gentle soul, who passed from this world at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy written in the lives she shaped.
Above all else, Wai Yee was a giver. Quiet in nature but boundless in warmth, she expressed her love most fluently through the meals she prepared, the care she offered without hesitation, and the tender attention she gave to every child who crossed her path. Those who knew her understood that her love was never loud, it was constant, steady, and deeply felt. "Love is patient, love is kind" (1 Corinthians 13:4), words that could have been written just for her.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Wai Yee pursued her university education in Taiwan before returning to dedicate her career to teaching Chinese language to generations of young students. She was remembered by many as a caring, devoted, and deeply respected educator — one of those rare teachers whose influence endures long after the classroom. As Henry Adams once wrote, "A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops." Her legacy lives on in every student who learned not only a language, but also a love of learning, from her.
Wai Yee travelled widely with her family, embracing each new place with the same quiet curiosity that defined her spirit. In 2018, she was received into the Catholic faith, a milestone of profound personal meaning that brought her great comfort, peace, and joy in her later years. She had found, at last, a home for the faith she had always quietly carried.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Carson Chang; her sons, Maurice and Albert; her daughters-in-law, Winnie and Rebecca; her grandchildren, Johnathan, Peter, Linus, Gianna, and Jocelyn; and her siblings, Gina, Winnie, and Alex. She was predeceased by her beloved brother, David.
Wai Yee found joy in life's simplest and most enduring blessings: a well-prepared meal shared with family, the laughter of young children, a new city explored with loved ones, and the spark of understanding in a student's eyes. She did not seek recognition. She sought only to give, to nurture, and to teach.
一日為師,終身為母
"Once a teacher, always a parent."
Wai Yee lived this truth in every classroom she entered and every meal she set on the table. The world is quieter without her, yet immeasurably richer for having had her in it. May she rest in the peace she so faithfully gave to others, and may her memory continue to be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23
