Winnifred “Jean” Jarvis
née Anderson
December 17, 1918 – November 7, 2015

Jean was in her 97th year at the time of her passing.

Jean married George William on April 18, 1942 and they had three girls who were always very close and dear to her. Family was very important to her and she loved to spend time with her daughters and their husbands; Cathy Jarvis (predeceased), Dorothy Barnes & Robert and Lynne Ballantine & Jim. She had a very special, endearing relationship with grandchildren; Colleen Browne (Mark), Kevin Barnes (Lynn Gayowski), Jeffrey (Michelle) and Scott Ballantine. She adored her great-grandchildren and relished in gatherings of four generations; Stacey & Diana Browne, Noah & Avery Ballantine. She was predeceased by her husband George and her younger brother Ronald Anderson. Her brother Fred Anderson, of Ottawa, has lovingly kept in touch.

Jean resided at the Jack Goodlad Senior Citizen Residence for the past 25 years where she had many dear friends and good times - Coffee Club and later Coffee on Jack, BINGO and jackpot winnings, Bid Euchre and “going over the moon”, Scarborough Support Services Luncheons with Janet as caterer, Hallowe’en and New Years Eve parties. She was a very active member of the Tenant’s Association for many years and thoroughly enjoyed it.
She also had friends at the Scarborough YMCA where she took part in Aquafit classes and other activities as she recognized the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Always keeping in tune with the times, she was “our lifeline” to current events and the weather and had a passion for reading, word search puzzles and playing Bananagrams.

Jean retired after 27+ years, from a position as Executive Secretary/Administrative Assistant at Dominion Engineering (General Electric) in Lachine, Quebec. She enjoyed working in the Hydraulics Department and was very highly regarded. She fondly remembered friends from the office and often shared stories with family.

For many years Jean was the sole breadwinner of the family and she worked diligently to provide for her girls. Cathy, who had cerebral palsy, was raised at home without the supports which are currently available for those with developmental disabilities. Jean’s commitment to her led to Cathy receiving an education and a wonderful array of social activities.

Jean received her post-secondary education Joan of Arc Academy in Ottawa. She was fluently bilingual and at one point worked for Charlotte Whitton before she became the first female mayor of Ottawa. Jean recounted stories of filling steno pads with short hand as Ms. Whitton dictated fast and furiously for hours at a time.

Family has so many fond memories of Granny. After moving to Toronto she actively and joyously took part in outings with her grandchildren; school field trips, movies, luncheons. She was ready to go at the drop of a hat.

Jean loved to spend time on the deck at Dorothy’s and Rob’s. On a warm sunny, bright summer day, with a glass of red wine in hand and cheese and crackers to snack on, it trumped all. She came equipped with hat, sunglasses and Kobo, ready to relax and enjoy. She watched the birds as they fed and bathed, the chipmunks and squirrels as the approached her for peanuts and loved it when the hummingbirds arrived. She always went to “her swing” first, but often moved to the lounger for a short nap. She certainly got her daily dose of vitamin D and never missed an opportunity to enjoy the deck. The plaque, at the ramp to the deck, will be redone to read, “Granny’s and Cathy’s Ramp”.

A memorial reception will be held Sunday, November 29th, 2015 from 1 – 3 p.m. at Pine Hills Visitation Centre, 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough.

Please, in lieu of flowers, donations to Community Living Toronto would be very much appreciated - 20 Spadina Rd, Toronto, Ontario, M5R 9Z9
