<div itemprop="description"> <p> <b> Gillis, Thelma </b> </p> <p> We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear mother, nanny, sister, aunt and friend, Thelma Gillis, 71, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Thelma passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital on September 7, 2012. Born in Inverness County, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Ben and Annie-Belle Hawley (Mackinnon). She was a member of St. Isaac&nbsp;Jogues Parish in Pickering. Thelma was predeceased by her loving husband Stanley. She will be cherished <b> </b> by her three children Darryl (Nancy) Gillis, Darlene (Dale)&nbsp;Lecour and Dawn (Danny) Puma and her six loving grandchildren Cameron, Tyler, Cooper, Mackenzie,&nbsp;Kaiden and Keegan. Thelma is also survived by her sisters Johnena, Evelyn, Clara and Thelma Marie and her brothers Bennie and Doug. <b> </b> She was predeceased by her brothers Donald Alex, Joe and Angus. After raising her children Thelma worked as a volunteer and lunchroom supervisor for several years at&nbsp;Pringdale Gardens Junior Public School and was employed at Carlton Cards for 26 years. Visitation will be held at THE SIMPLE ALTERNATIVE FUNERAL CENTRE , 1057 Brock Road, Pickering, 905-686-5589 on Tuesday, September 11th from 3 pm to 6 pm. Funeral service will be held immediately after the visitation at 6 pm in the Chapel. The degree in which Thelma was loved and respected was illustrated by the numerous visits, phone calls and cards she received during her illness. We would like to express our appreciation to the countless family members and friends that have supported mom and our family during her illness. The family would also like to thank the staff in the Palliative Care Unit at Sunnybrook Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion.
