Suzanne Clairette Desrocher-Romero passed away suddenly on June 24, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario. She was 67. Known affectionately as Suz, she was pre-deceased by her father, Gerald Desrocher, and her husband, legendary filmmaker George A. Romero. She is survived by her mother, Ginette (Huot) Desrocher; her stepchildren, Tina and Andrew Romero; her siblings Gerry (Ikuko Ito), Eric, Genevieve, and Jonathan; her nieces and nephews, including Marie and Louie, and her goddaughter, Emily. Her beloved friend, Daintry, and her large found family with whom she shared birthdays, holidays and many other special occasions, will miss her more than words can express.
Suz was born in Montreal and grew up in Laval, Quebec. As a young woman, she attended John Abbott College Theatre and then graduated from the Dawson College (Dome) Professional Theatre Program before moving to Toronto to begin a career in hospitality services.
She loved playing all kinds of board and card games, was a skilled tennis player, an avid traveller, and a diehard sports fan who followed tennis, the Olympics, and rooted enthusiastically for the Canadiens and Blue Jays. Her passion for the arts was a constant throughout her life, and she regularly attended the symphony, opera, ballet, museums and, of course, the theatre, particularly Shakespeare and the Stratford Festival.
She often said that meeting George Romero was the most unexpected event of her life. At first, she had no idea who he was or what he did, but he changed her forever. They were married in 2011 at a friend’s home in Martha’s Vineyard, and embarked on a full, loving life together, working on George’s films, travelling widely, and beating each other at Scrabble. She was devastated when he died in 2017, but determined to protect and enhance his legacy. The George A. Romero Foundation is her monument to him and his work. She created it from nothing and learned how to make it grow through her intelligence, unwavering dedication, and fierce work ethic. Now it is a monument to her as well.
She was a sensitive, kind, generous, loving, passionate woman. She will be forever loved, remembered, and deeply missed.
