Susie Langley died peacefully on November 29, 2025, at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto with family at her side. She was predeceased by her mother, Alice Hawkins Golding, and her father, Jack Golding. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Wayne, son Paul Bredderman (Sean Patton), and sister Jane McIntyre (Norman), nieces and nephews Donald (Ailish), Tim (Carolyn), and Sara Beveridge (Brad), and nine great nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law Miriam Langley. She is also survived on the Hawkins side by cousins Carole, Ike, Barrie, Karen, Beecher and Katherine.
Born in Saint John, and raised by her mother in Pennfield NB, Susie’s lifelong love of learning began in a one - room schoolhouse in Pennfield that led to earning a Master of Science degree from Cornell University. In the interim, she followed the family tradition of attending Acadia University, where she earned the Governor General’s Medal and her B.Sc. , plus a full scholarship to Cornell University.
Once she earned her RD her mission was to make nutrition understandable and practical for everyone. She began her career as a clinical dietitian at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina. During that time, she helped develop both a curriculum on dietary assessment for first-year medical students, as well as a nutrition curriculum for Family Medicine Residents at the East Carolina University School of Medicine.
With her career underway, an unexpected meeting with Wayne Langley at their 25th class reunion at Acadia University changed everything. The two fell in love, Susie returned to Canada, got married then embarked on a one-month honeymoon traveling around the world.
On their return Susie established her own private practice as a dietitian. Working initially with corporate executives, she then found an opportunity in sports nutrition and quickly became a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She began consulting with coaches in collegiate athletics then athletes in professional hockey and other sports. She was thrilled to eventually work with a variety of athletes from Team Canada in sports such as wheelchair basketball, figure skating, judo, and sailing.
Susie was also a skilled communicator and educator. She was invited to appear on local news shows and established a longstanding column with The Medical Post. She taught nutrition at Ryerson (now TMU) and was invited by SCAN in the US to co-author a comprehensive text on sports nutrition and performance. In 2009, she was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate from Acadia University for her life’s work, and in that same year, was proud to receive the Ryley-Jeffs Memorial Lecture Award from the Dietitians of Canada.
Susie had a passion for watercolor painting, which included even more frequent visits to the Maritimes in retirement. She loved making trips to Hilton Head to celebrate family birthdays with son Paul and to Siesta Key with sister and closest friend Jane.
She also had many other interests, for instance, shortly after she moved into Delmanor West Village she joined their book, choral and gardening clubs and of course the watercolour painters.
She will be much remembered for her warm personality, sharp mind, happy smile and for her love and support of family and friends.
She was well lived, much loved, and at the very end, courageous.
