Susan Kerekes, affectionately known as “Nana,” passed away peacefully during the night of March 10, 2013, at the age of 84, in the company of her family. She had been hospitalized early February and was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. Her radiation treatments were palliative, and last week she was transferred to a palliative ward. Her husband Peter and extended family members were with her daily until her passing. Susan had wished to be cremated and interred at Mt Pleasant Cemetery, at a spot she and Peter chose, surrounded by nature.

Susan’s memory will be forever tied to warm laughter and quirky, timeless jokes; to the vibrant colours of well loved gardens and plants; to the aromas of hearty Goulash and rich desserts, topped with generous helpings of "hab" (whipped cream) . A true positive spirit, her passion for life and the small pleasures that truly make it beautiful was infectious. She had a gift for generating smiles and helping to put things in the best perspectives. She was admired by all who knew her.

Susan did not like to make decisions, and she was often hesitant and wavering on the small, everyday choices she had to make. But on a few occasions, she did not hesitate or second-guess herself, and was determined to follow through. That is the reason her family is all here in Canada; she never hesitated to leave Hungary and come to Canada, despite the problems, risks and difficulties it entailed, including travelling with her 2 year old daughter, walking for half a night, and leaving her homeland behind to travel to an unknown country. With similar determination, she pushed her husband Peter to arrange to move from Montreal to Toronto in 1976, leaving behind their recently purchased first house. She was happy to let Peter make the small, everyday decisions, but the major life-affecting things were decided by her, and she did not hesitate on those.

A loving and greatly loved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Susan was a genuine source of encouragement, entertainment, and affection for the entire family. We will always remember her warmth, spirit, and generosity; her vibrant energy and great food. She was one of a kind. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.

Susan is survived by Peter, her loving husband of 60 years and daughter, Marianne (Chris) Hitz; son, Tony (Jenny) Kerekes; and grandchildren, Greg (Melissa) Hitz, David (Jackie) Hitz, Jamie and David Nicholson, and great-granddaughters, Marley and Leila Hitz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the JNF Tree Planting Center at http://www.jnf.org/support/tree-planting-center or to a charity of your choice under the Donations tab.
