It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Susan Gartha on September 6, 2012 at St. Michael’s Hospital. She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Ivan Gartha (2000). Their marriage was a long and happy one. Susan will be lovingly missed by her daughter Cathy and husband Peter of Los Angeles and son Andrew and wife Teresa of Markham. She was an extraordinary grandmother to David and Jenny of L.A. and Isabelle and Julia of Markham.

She was born in Budapest and was a pioneer of her time, becoming a pediatrician when women were not expected to become a medical professional. Susan and Ivan sought a better life for themselves and their daughter Cathy and future son Andrew by leaving behind family and risking their lives to come to Canada.

Here in Toronto, Dr. Susan as she was often called, practiced pediatrics in Canada for almost 50 years. She was a woman who found her calling by providing extraordinary care to countless newborns and children – right up until they were young adults. Many of her patients and parents of her patients will remember her warmly for her many years of service to them.

Not only an exceptional pediatrician, Susan loved and lived life to the fullest and with utmost zest. An avid and accomplished snow skier who conquered black diamond hills, a woman who water-skied slalom well into her seventies and loved the cottage life on Lake Simcoe. Susan also loved the arts; she relished going to the opera, symphony and movies with friends and family.

To honor and celebrate her life, a memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 12th at 10:00am followed by a memorial service at 11:00am at Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Rd, Toronto (416) 485-5572. Condolences and memories may be forwarded to mountpleasantvcinfo@mountpleasantgroup.com . In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Dr. Susan Gartha’s name to support her husband’s charity, the Parkinson Society of Canada (www.parkinson.ca), 4211 Yonge St. Suite 316, Toronto, ON M2P 2A9.
