Simon Chiu passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 13, 2026 at the age of 78.
Simon is survived by his mother Siu Luk Kwan; beloved wife of 53 years, Lana; his sons Jason (Kit) and Wilson (Anna); and grandchildren (Clayton, Cohen, Elliot, Josephine and Theodore), whom he adored and was immensely proud of; and his brothers David (Margaret) and Mark (Elke). He is predeceased by his father Chiu Jo Pui, and his twin brother Andrew (Alice).
Simon was a family man, an entrepreneur, an adventurer and a devoted follower of Jesus. His intellect, determination and quiet courage carried him from China to Europe and ultimately to Canada. He was born September 11, 1947, in Guangdong, China.
Simon’s formative years were marked by learning and lasting friendship. He studied at Aberdeen Technical School, where he forged lifelong bonds and enjoyed experiences he would fondly recount for decades, always with humour and affection. Awarded a scholarship and internship at BMW Munich, Germany, Simon embarked on a journey that would define his character. Arriving without any knowledge of the German language, he totally immersed himself by first completing the BMW internship followed by a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Munich, entirely in German. After marrying his childhood sweetheart Lana, he went on to work in Singapore for several years following graduation. Simon later returned to Hong Kong, where he worked with leading manufacturing companies at a pivotal time, as facilities were being established in southern China. In 1981, driven by opportunity and the hope of a better future, Simon and his family made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada, first settling in Calgary, Alberta. There, Simon spent three happy and productive years before work brought the family to Mississauga, Ontario.
Entrepreneurship had always been his aspiration. After settling in Mississauga, Simon and his wife, Lana, founded Kingstec. For more than 42 years, Simon and Lana built Kingstec into a respected engineering and manufacturing specialist. The company was a source of immense pride for Simon—not only for its professional success, but as a family-built business grounded in integrity, perseverance and trust.
Simon retired from Kingstec 12 years ago and embraced retirement with enthusiasm. He spent many joyful years travelling the world with Lana and close friends, revisiting favourite destinations and discovering new ones. During a brief business trip with his son Wilson, Simon discovered the concept of a “bucket list,” which quickly became a personal mission to see, do and eat all the things on his bucket list.
Among his most treasured experiences were ski trips to Switzerland with his “ATS boys,” memories he spoke of often. Skiing with his family was another enduring joy. He eagerly awaited winter each year and was happiest on the slopes—or gathered afterward for a well-earned après-ski meal.
Simon will be deeply missed and will be remembered for his intellect, resilience, integrity, generosity, love for a good steak and wine, and unwavering love for his family.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Simon with his family during the visitation at Meadowvale Funeral Centre on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 10:00-11:00am. The memorial service celebrating Simon’s life and faith will be immediately after from 11:00-12:00pm.
As an expression of sympathy, the family would appreciate donations to Trillium Health Partners Foundation
