Shirley Agnes McKerron
March 9, 1927 - November 9, 2013
McKerron, Shirley Agnes (nee Ripley) in her 86th year passed away in her sleep on Saturday November 9th. She is survived by her husband Don of 64 years and her children - Ross, Elizabeth (Murray Huff), Susan ( Brock Carlton) and Scott ( Laura Cude); grandchildren - Erin, Andrew, Ian, Ryan, Laurel, Lindsay, Hollis, Stephen and Alexander; and sister Kay (D'arcy McNabb), and brother Donald Ripley. She is predeceased by her parents - Laun and Agnes, her brother Byron and her stepbrother Launie.
Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Shirley attended Normal School and then taught primary school in Glace Bay (MacKay’s Corners). She married Don in 1949 and moved to Don Mills, Ontario in 1955. She enjoyed a fulfilling life as a loving and supportive wife, mother, homemaker and grandmother. She enjoyed a variety of activities including golfing, reading, playing bridge, baking and volunteering at Thompson House. She was an active member of the UCW at the Donway Covenant United Church. Shirley loved to travel with Don to Europe. The planning of the trips, visiting new places and sharing pictures and stories with friends and family were highlights for her. And if there had been a sport in the Olympics for Grammatical Proficiency, she would surely have been Canada’s gold medalist!
The last 10 years of Shirley’s life were challenging. She defeated breast cancer, recovered from a serious neck injury and wrestled valiantly with Parkinson’s.
We express a special thank you to Rose and Evelyn for their loving care while Shirley resided in the North York Senior Health Centre. We are very grateful for the care given by the third floor nursing team.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 13 at The Simple Alternative, 275 Lesmill Road from 2:00 – 4:00 and from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A remembrance service will be held at the Donway Covenant United Church (230 The Donway West) on Thursday the 14th at 2:00 pm.
On-line condolences can be made at e-touch.ca.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
