Mrs. Shakuntla Jain, Warrior Princess, fought throughout her life for the happiness of her family.
Born in Lucknow, India on July 7, 1936, mom was always at the forefront of courage.
In the early 70s, she was considered a modern woman, who learned English, made all the necessary preparations and traveled alone to Canada with 5 kids in town This type of action was unknown for women in our town of Lucknow. For several years prior, mom looked after her 5 children in India, while her husband Ram Singh Jain worked hard in Toronto to earn enough money to bring his family to join him.
Arriving in Canada in 1973, mom only had the comfort of a complete family, for a short 5 years until death of our father in 1978.
That is where her extraordinary story of courage and sacrifice truly began. Today, we can hardly understand how a widowed immigrant woman managed to keep her 5 young children together, educate them through university, and see them through marriage to start their own families without much outside help.
Times were different in the 70's and 80's, there was very little help available to people in her predicament, but she fought through. Mom worked for low paying jobs and saved where and when she could in order to maintain our family home in the house that our father had bought with such love and hope.
She especially loved spending time with her family, listening to music and travelling - Niagara Falls being her favourite.
Mom always maintained her dignity and held her head high. She laughed and smiled and was kind to everyone she met.
Mom lived independently until she was 70 in her own home, and then lived with her children.
The last two months of mom's life were lovingly spent with her 2nd eldest son in Calgary, with whom she did not spend as much time with as the others in Toronto.
Mom lived a very full life and if there was a medal for family achievements, she would certainly be the Winner.
With heavy hearts we bid her goodbye knowing that she will always be with us, in the caring and loving attitude that she instilled in all of us.
Mom is survived by her children Yogender, Virendra, Punam, Sunil, and Shakti, respected spouses, Shafali, Fraser, Pinki and Mohamed - as well as her grandchildren Rohin, Roshni, Luca, Maya, Alisha, Daman, Kiran and Kartik. She also leaves behind her brothers Ved Prakash Agarwal and Santosh Agarwal in India, as well as a large extended family in both Canada and India.
According to Hindu belief, mom will be born in another family to start a new life. We wish you well and due to the cycle of Karma, we know you will be reborn in happiness and love.
As for your legacy, your children promise you that we will do what you always wanted for us, that is: happiness.
We will strive to be happy and look after our families as you looked after yours.
We thank you for all that you did for us from the bottom of our hearts and ask your forgiveness for our shortcomings.
You will always be a special part of each of us.
Love you Forever, remember you Always....namaste mummi - oh how we will miss you so.
