Passed away peacefully on Saturday November 22, 2025. Predeceased by her husband Richard Grout and her son Bruce Grout. Survived by her children Judy (John), Carolyn (Alan) and James, her grandchildren Eryn (Jesse), Stephen (Jessie) and Carey (Mark) LeMesurier, Lindsay (Brandon) and David (Morgan) Grout and Erik and Owen Christensen. Fondly remembered by Sharon Pel and Stuart LeMesurier.
Sally was born October 28 to Howard Frederick Baker and Sheila MacPherson Brown. Sally and her older sister Nancy were educated at St. Clement's School. Sally was proud of the six Clementines in three generations of our family. She studied science and then nursing at the University of Toronto. Sally had a great group of friends from St. Clements, the Pi Beta Phi sorority at U of T, and nursing classmates.
Mum enjoyed cottaging on Lake Temagami throughout her entire life. As a girl, her family first summered at Camp Chimo, on the lake and then at their own Island 857. Mum met our father, Dick on the lake as teens. The Grout family also summered at the Lake on Island 943. The legend is that Dad asked Mum out on one date a year until he came to his senses and married the smart, beautiful and very entertaining woman in 1954.
Judy arrived a year later, followed by James in 1957, Bruce in 1959 and Carolyn in 1961. We lived in Humber Valley in Etobicoke. Summers were spent in Temagami. We are now fifth generation on the Lake.
Before her marriage, Sally worked as an obstetrical nurse at Wellesley Hospital. After marriage, she was employed with the Victorian Order of Nurses and then as a School Nurse. Later in life, she became a residential real estate agent and had a successful career at Kingsway Real Estate.
Mum and Dad had a great group of friends. Mum played the piano, had a pitch perfect voice and engaged the whole gang to sing along. She was a loyal, fun and engaging friend.
Sally loved raising dogs (yellow Labradors) and riding horses. She spent years convincing Dad to go riding with her. In their later years they spent wonderful time together riding at dude ranches in the American Southwest.
Sally was a devoted and fun-loving grandmother to all seven of her grandchildren. She spent time with them in the city and especially at the family cottage, where Sally’s mischievous side would reveal itself when playing with her grandkids!
Sally was also a dedicated volunteer throughout her life. She spent over 30 years volunteering at the Hospital for Sick Children in a variety of roles. She was famous for her hand-knitted children’s strawberry hats that were available in the Hospital gift shop for many years.
After the loss of her husband and son, Sally moved into the Village of Humber Heights where she lived out her golden years with dignity, grace and always a big laugh and a beautiful smile.
She will be missed. Never forgotten. Simply put, she lived to love those she cared for. Our Gal Sal.
