Ronald Joseph Steel
August 18, 1934 - January 24, 2014
Ronald Joseph Steel, 79, of Richmond Hill, passed away at Sunnybrook Hospital on January 24, 2014 during heart valve replacement surgery, despite the best efforts of the medical staff.
He was born to the late Violet “Vicki” Walkoff (nee Beck) and Joseph Lewis Steel on August 16, 1934 in Toronto, Ontario. Ron graduated from the school of life, becoming a successful entrepreneur in the GTA. He married Marie (nee Hughes) on August 16, 1974 and they lived together in Henry Farms, Toronto prior to moving to Richmond Hill in 2002.
Ron will be missed by his beloved wife Marie, son Jason (Sarah), granddaughter Clarke (3-1/2), twin grandsons Warner and Marshall (6 weeks), his sister Carol, and numerous others he has inspired throughout his life.
Ron founded Steel Fire Equipment Ltd in 1958 working out of the trunk of his 1953 Ford. From these humble beginnings Ron grew the business into a leading manufacturer and wholesaler to military, OEMS, industrial supply houses and fire equipment distributors around the world. Ron also had a passion for real estate and designed and built the family home, cottage, and numerous warehouse buildings including the modern offices of Steel Fire Equipment located in Mississauga, Ontario.
A celebration of Ron's life will be held at Elgin Mills Visitation Centre, 1591 Elgin Mills Road East Richmond Hill, ON L4S 1M9, on Saturday, February 1, 1:30-3 pm, with remarks at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
