In Chinese funerals, a white envelope contains condolence money, or 帛金, to help the bereaved family with expenses. The odd numbered amount (ending in 1,3,5,7,or 9) in the envelope is significant, symbolizing a wish that no further loss will occur, as odd numbers are associated with sorrow and even numbers with good fortune.
