Richard Gibson Purves, born September 15, 1933, passed away on April 13, 2015 at 81. He was loving Father to Stephen & Janine Purves (Cameron Trollope), grandfather of Jenna & Michelle, brother to Jean Howell & Frank and uncle to many. He was born and raised in Willowdale in a small house in the Don valley by Cummer Ave. The proximity to the city, yet ability to enjoy the ravines influenced his choice in raising his own family nearby. He had a successful career at Bell Telephone, and then moved into a sales position at Tele-Direct Yellow Pages, where he made many friends and received numerous awards. He was always ready to enjoy a game of golf, curling, or round of cards with his friends. His favourite place to relax with family and friends was the cottage in Haliburton on Kushog Lake. He finished the interior himself, with the help of many friends and family. It was truly a project of love, and the cottage became a mainstay for the family where they were always sharing a good story, some good food, and a jump in the lake.
Richards last years were challenging as he suffered from a stroke and dealt with Aphasia, but many special friends still helped him to enjoy life. We want to thank all those that helped to make a difference.
A memorial service is being held Wed. April 22nd, 1:00pm, at York Cemetery & Visitation Centre, 160 Beecroft, Toronto, (Sheppard & Yonge) followed by a reception. For those that cannot attend the service, a celebration will continue in the evening at the family home in Richmond Hill.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any donations be made to The Aphasia Centre at www.aphasia.ca
