Ranjit Kumar Dhar passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in Toronto, Ontario at the age of 90.
Born and educated in India, Ranjit graduated from IIT Kharagpur before completing his graduate studies at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. In 1965, he married Suchitra (Natun) Ray, and together they emigrated to Canada in 1968, beginning their new life in Saint John, New Brunswick. They embraced their new home with gratitude while remaining deeply connected to their Bengali heritage, sharing its culture and traditions with the community around them. Both their daughters, (Suranjita) Nina and (Nilotpaula) Runa, were born in the Maritimes before the family moved to Toronto, settling in North York.
Ranjit built a distinguished career as a Canadian architect, senior public-sector project manager, and respected leader in national architectural organizations. His professional life spanned private practice, federal government service, and international leadership roles. He served terms as President of both the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA). He was honoured as a Fellow of the RAIC, a Fellow of the Canadian Design-Build Institute, and an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He also co-authored An Architect’s Guide to Design-Build. Among his greatest professional joys was mentoring students and internationally trained architects as they established their careers in Canada.
In his retirement years, Ranjit found his deepest happiness in the presence of his beloved grandchildren, JD and Renée. Whether walking with them to school, playing games, or sharing simple lunches “just the three of them,” these everyday moments brought him immense joy. His face would brighten at the mere mention of their names, and the time he spent with them became one of the greatest joys and defining comforts of his later years.
Ranjit was predeceased by his devoted wife, Suchitra, his parents Tarak Chandra and Anilarani Dhar, his sisters Purabi Biswas and Juthika Chatterjee, and his brother Arijit Dhar.
He is survived by his daughters Suranjita Nina (Gordon) and Runa (James), his grandchildren James Dhar and Renée Sophia, and his siblings Maya Bramha, Bithika Rudra, Sujit Dhar, and Rita Das. He will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Michael’s Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. In honour of Ranjit’s memory, and in lieu of flowers, donations to St. Michael’s Hospital are appreciated. Follow the Donations tab at the top of this page for a link.
