PRISCILLA DEVITT FREEMAN
(NEE HINCHCLIFFE)

Born February 12, 1930 in New York City; died at home of pancreatic cancer February 10, 2015 in Toronto with her family by her side. Priscilla grew up in the West Indies, United States, and Canada where she was educated at Calvert School, and St. John’s School, graduating from Branksome Hall (‘48); and Mt. Holyoke College (‘51) with a BA in Zoology. This led to a year at the Jackson Laboratory working with dogs and mice, but this proved not to be a lifetime vocation for one whose first and continuing love was English literature. Priscilla then obtained a Bachelor of Library Sciences (‘54) from the University of Toronto and began a work as the Science Librarian at McMaster University, where she met her future husband. Priscilla spent many years working in libraries in Toronto and Perth, Ontario including at the CNIB. Upon retiring from library services she volunteered at the Toronto Symphony Rummage Sale and for over 20 years with the University of Toronto, Victoria College annual book sale for which she was honoured with an Arbour Award in 2013. As a lifetime enthusiastic reader in many subject areas she often engaged in lengthy discussions with the staff at many of Toronto’s booksellers and a few Book Clubs. Friendships with coworkers and in courses taken at St. Michaels College were greatly treasured. Left with memories of time spent with an always interesting and loving person are her husband of 55 years Edward, her children Bruce (Marilyn), Naomi Pinn, grandchildren Caitlin and Samantha Pinn, sister Nancy Butler, her sisters- and brothers-in-law, a large family of cousins, nieces and nephews, and many long-time friends. A celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mt. Pleasant Road (East Gate Entrance). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
