With heavy hearts, we are sharing the passing of Paul Yoannou. He died peacefully surrounded by love. Married to the love of his life, Fotini for 43 years, together for 51. Proud father of Ryan (Sarah) and Jennifer (Andy), and loving Dedo to Olivia, Lukas, Sophie, Elle, Nicholas and Teddy. Devoted son of the late George and Kay Yoannou, little brother to Mary (Paul) and the late Laurie (Tony). Best friend and brother-in-law to Peter and special cousin to Joannie and Voula. One of a kind big cousin to the knucklehead Yoannou clan and friend to so many.
Paul lived a large life. Known for his humour, quick wit, and charisma, he was an unmistakable presence that could light up any room. Conversations were never dull in his company; stories grew taller (facts negotiable), jokes landed harder, and laughter always followed. He had a rare gift for making people feel welcome, included, and at ease making friends wherever he went.
Paul spent many summers in Wasaga Beach with his cousins and winter vacations in Hollywood, Florida. Raised in the restaurant industry, he learned early the value of hard work, resilience, and showing up—lessons that guided him through life’s highs and lows. A lifelong sports lover, Paul found joy in both playing and watching the game, especially football, hockey and golf. There was also one time he tried snowboarding, flew an airplane and even jumped out of one. He loved to travel, turning every trip into a story. Over the years, he wore many professional hats meeting each chapter with energy, determination, and humour with his unwavering commitment to providing for and supporting those he loved.
Above all else, Paul loved his family deeply. They were the centre of his world and the source of his greatest pride. He would drop anything to be with them, offer impactful advice (although he didn’t always listen to it), and was happiest cooking over a grill, looking at the water, listening to music, having a beer and going for a drive (motorcycles included). He leaves behind a family who adored him and who will forever carry his stories, one-liners, and spirit with them.
Paul was given excellent care throughout the years from the many hospitals he visited, especially Dr. Sridhar and her team at Princess Margaret. We are deeply grateful to all the PSW’s and nurses who supported him at home, particularly Anga, who brought him great comfort in his final eight months. Paul faced his illness with remarkable strength, resilience, and an unyielding will to live. He will be so missed.
Visitation will take place Thursday, February 5th, 2 – 7 p.m., at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre (375 Mount Pleasant Road).
Private Funeral on Friday February 6th, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
If desired, contributions can be made in honour of Paul to either Bladder Cancer Canada or Princess Margaret Hospital - Prostate and Genitourinary (GU) Cancers.
