We have lost a beautiful gentle light - someone described by all who met him and knew him as kind, peaceful and good.
Paul was born to Benedict and Anna in Prague, Czechoslovakia. After completing high school he trained as an electrician. In 1969, while he was completing mandatory service in the army, Paul escaped from Soviet-bloc Czechoslovakia and made his way to England. He worked at various jobs while perfecting his English including in group homes and as a carpenter at the Bodleian library in Oxford. After considering his options Paul decided to pursue training as a priest in Rome. On June 6th, 1981 he was ordained into the Roman Catholic priesthood. He was offered a choice of where he would work. He chose Canada.
Paul worked in a number of parishes – in Brampton, Barrie, St. Gertrude’s in Oshawa, St. Patrick’s in Staynor and Corpus Christi in Toronto. Paul retired from the priesthood in 2000 and spent the next 25 years being the best dad imaginable to the light of his life, his daughter Caroline. During that time Paul worked for Durham Mental Health Services and later volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. He loved to be busy and was endlessly curious, always ready to pitch in and help anyone in need. He could turn his hand at almost anything – building decks and fences, stonework, gardening, sewing, writing, computer repair, wine making, cooking. Paul, Rita and Caroline travelled extensively over the years. He enjoyed live theatre, good wine, any and all things dessert related, old Brit Coms, good literature and a nice cup of tea.
Paul will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Rita, his daughter Caroline (Ewan), his brother Jiri (predeceased by sister-in-law Jarka), step-daughter Nicki (Mircea), mother- in-law Adrienne, sister-in-law Laura (John), brother-in-laws Andre (Eva) and Raymond (Carol), nephews Adrian, Evan, Jordan, nieces Lia and Rihana, and special life-long friends Caroline, Alexandra, Beverly and Natasha - extended family who were in ongoing contact. He will also be remembered by the many, many parishioners whose lives he touched over the years.
A private mass was held at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Brooklin.
