Paramjit “Toli” Dhaliwal was born in Amritsar, India on July 23, 1933. She left us peacefully, surrounded by family on January 5, 2012.

Toli was the loving wife of Amrik Dhaliwal for the past 48 years, devoted and inspirational mother to her sons Jas, Ken and his wife Kelly and the very proud and indulgent grandmother to Mira and Kiran.

She was also an important part of a larger family which consisted of her extended family and many, many friends. Toli was an incredibly social person. She was at the centre of many groups of friends in Toronto and in India. Toli loved to have people around and was constantly organizing or attending gatherings of one kind or another. The family has been very comforted by the overwhelming expressions of support and sympathy of Toli’s very large social group.

She especially loved having young people in her home. When her own children or grandchildren weren’t there, she arranged to have foreign students or even her extended family’s children spend time. She was a mother to everyone’s children, especially in her home.

As a strong, independent woman, Toli was looked up to by many. She wore her heart on her sleeve and always let you know what she was thinking in any situation. Her friends and family admired this because they always got a straight answer and the best advice from her. She had a clearness of heart that allowed her to see things for what they were and to help others to see them too.

She was a free spirit who always wanted to try for more and she lived her life to the fullest. She and her husband, Amrik, went to visit family many times in India over the years and together they travelled through many parts of the country. They also travelled to the Caribbean, Europe, Thailand, the Mediterranean, and the Canadian Rockies. She would always compare the landscape of other places in the world to the beauty of India.

Toli was a tremendous cook and she enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends and took great pride in preparing excellent food. It was often said that she should have opened her own restaurant – except that running it would have interfered with her very busy social life.

A visitation service will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM at Elgin Mills Cemetery, Crematorium and Visitation Centre at 1591 Elgin Mills Road East in Richmond Hill.
