It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Oi Lin Pong. On the evening of September 13th, 2015, at the age of 87 years old, Oi Lin departed peacefully while surrounded by her family at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, ON.

Oi Lin was born on February 22nd, 1928 in Dong Quan, Guongduong, China. She was the eldest child of six. At the age of 12, she escaped with one of her sisters into the Guongduong countryside during the Japanese Invasion of WWII. During the war, she faced hardships such as scarcity of food and survived solely on sweet potatoes until she was reunited with her family. This experience lead to a lifelong appreciation for sweet potatoes.

She lived in hiding from the Japanese and trained to become a nurse in Tai Shan, China. Eventually becoming Head Nurse.

After the war, she met Fu Leung Pong, the love of her life, at a church gathering in the city of Guong Zhou. Fu Leung had just returned from Singapore and heard that there was a beautiful woman who played the piano at his church. Curious, he went to see this extraordinary woman and fell in love. As he was one of the few men who owned a motorcycle, Oi Lin was quite taken with him. They married on August 15th, 1950.

They had their first child, Sherrie, 1 year later. A year after Sherrie's birth, their second child, Irene, was born followed by Grace, their third child.

After the Communist regime began in 1948, she had the foresight to flee to Hong Kong despite protests from Fu Leung. On her own, she used her skills as a nurse to establish herself in Hong Kong and helped her young daughters join her as the situation worsened in China. Fu Leung was imprisoned by the Communists and tortured. Oi Lin lived in Hong Kong raising her three daughters and working as a nurse until Fu Leung escaped. They moved to Macau and had their fourth daughter Christina.

She followed her daughters to Canada in the late 70s and helped raise 9 grandchildren. She loved cooking, travelling and church. From Alaska to Antarctica, Oi Lin has been on many adventures across the world.

True to the meaning of her name (龐朱愛憐) , her energy, kindness and drive to help those in need are what her family and friends will remember most.

Oi Lin Pong is survived by her four siblings: 朱漢榮 (Hong Wing), 朱愛珍 (Oi Chun) , 朱愛玲 (Oi Ling) and (朱保榮)Po Wing.
