Miriam Jane Hall, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, scholar, teacher, and quiet hero, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of intellect, devotion, and boundless love.
Miriam was predeceased by her devoted husband, Douglas Graham Hall, whom she married on April 30, 1960. Together they shared 65 years of marriage marked by partnership, curiosity, and deep family devotion. His passing in September 2025 was a profound loss in her life.
She was the cherished mother of five children: Virginia (Frank), Rose, Oswin, Stephen, and Sheila (Grant). Her life radiated outward through eleven grandchildren—Teri (Anthony), Tammy, Tanya, Tina, Michael, Nicholas (Nicole), Heather (Matteo), Gaia, Akasha, Anara, and Ian—and eight great grandchildren who brought her immense joy and purpose. Miriam played an especially hands on role in raising several of her grandchildren, most notably Michael, whom she cared for from birth. To her family, she was a super mom and super grandma, often lovingly described as a true hero for all that she gave.
She is also survived by her brother, Henry Kerr (Mary Lynne), with whom she shared a lifelong bond.
Miriam’s intellectual gifts were remarkable. She studied Engineering Physics at the University of Toronto and earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Acadia University. Early in her career, she worked as a statistician in Alberta’s Tar Sands. After moving to Scarborough in the 1960s, she began teaching mathematics at the University of Toronto. Soon after, she became instrumental in the early development of the university’s computer science program, teaching computer programming at a time when the field itself was still emerging—quietly shaping generations of future thinkers.
Beyond her academic accomplishments, Miriam lived fully and deliberately. She loved music, especially classical compositions, Enya, Joan Baez, Nana Mouskouri, and Loreena McKennitt. She took great pride in her beautiful garden, carefully cultivating continuous blooms that reflected her patience and care. She delighted in reading, planning healthy and thoughtful meals, and spending meaningful time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Travel brought her joy and wonder—memories of Alaska, Hawaii, Cuba, and Disney World were among her favorites. At home, she was rarely still, always fixing something, improving something, or nurturing those around her.
Miriam will be remembered as patient, loving, deeply caring, and exceptionally intelligent. Her quiet strength, tireless generosity, and unwavering presence shaped her family and touched all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the lives she nurtured, the minds she inspired, and the love she gave so freely.
Her absence leaves a profound silence, but her influence remains—steady, enduring, and deeply felt.
