Mioko Lucy Shimizu
August 18, 1930 - November 17, 2011
Mioko (Arai) Shimizu
MIOKO LUCY SHIMIZU (nee ARAI) passed away peacefully on November 17, 2011. Born in Vancouver in 1930 to Mozaemon and Yu Arai, relocated to Tashme, to Toronto, and then to Winnipeg. Beloved wife of the late Victor Shimizu. Dearly loved by children Kathy (Gregor), Janice (Joshua), and David (Tracy). Adored grandmother of Maya, Aaron, Leah, and Matthew. Greatly missed by brother Arthur (Audrey) Arai, sister Hideko Arai, and brother Arnold (the late Sadie) Arai. Predeceased by sister Yukiko (the late Mikio) Nakamura. Sadly missed by Victor's siblings Ted (the late Shiz) Shimizu, Grace (Tsuguo) Arai, and Dorothy (Ron) Shigeishi, as well as her many nieces and nephews of whom she was so proud.
Mio was a primary school teacher in Toronto and Winnipeg before devoting herself to raising her children. An incredibly loving (and VERY patient) mom, she constantly used her wonderful cooking and crafting talents to provide whatever treats and costumes the occasion required. She and Victor shared a great love of music, literature, and cultural activities. They also enjoyed travelling, and after Victor passed away, Mio continued to cross the continent many times to visit her children and grandchildren. Her positive spirit and love for life were an inspiration to many and she will be missed dearly.
Family and friends may call at The Simple Alternative Funeral Centre, 1535 South Gateway Road, Mississauga, 905.602.1580 on Friday, November 25th from 13 and 79 p.m. A private funeral will be held the next day, with private interment to follow in Winnipeg.
