Peacefully, with his devoted wife at his bedside, at North York General Hospital at the age of 84. Dearly beloved husband of Helen for 50 years. Loving father of Nancy Stickland, Joan McGuinness, Mary Kilgour and Dian Eberlin. Proud grandfather of Ashley, Steven, Griffin, Lindsay, Rosemary, Sophie, Michael and Katilin. Fondly remembered by sons-in-law Al Murphy (Scott), Howard Porter, Jeffrey Kilgour, and Grant Eberlin.
Born in Nyasaland, Africa and educated at the University of Cape Town and University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar (Rodesia and Oriel 1950), Michael immigrated to Canada in 1952 where he enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an actuary at the National Life Assurance Company and Eckler Partners Ltd. He served on the Board of Governors of the Society of Actuaries and held numerous positions with the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. In his retirement, Michael pursued his love of travel with Helen, sailing the world on 30 cruises. The family wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to Dr. Henry Rappaport for her compassionate care. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Chemotherapy Clinic and Palliative Care Unit at North York General Hospital and to all those who generously donate blood. In honour of Michael's memory, the family will receive friends on Saturday September 7th from 2:00pm to 4:30pm at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre. In Lieu of flowers, donations to the North York General Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
