Melvyn James Katzman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 1, 2025, at 7:05 a.m., on a day when the sky was clear and the sun shone brightly, as if his passing was graced by light itself, after facing Alzheimer’s in his later years with courage and supported by the love of his family.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce Karen Katzman; his children Mark, Jeff, Michelle and Jason; and nine grandchildren who will forever treasure his memory.
Born and raised in the Wilson Heights area in a small house on Vinci Crescent, he was the only child of two loving parents, Mannie and Esther Katzman.
Melvyn was especially proud to be a member of the Bathurst Jewish Community Centre (BJCC), where he earned the nickname “The Kid” and treasured the friendships he made. Generous to a fault, he quietly organized fundraisers, collected for members in need, and hosted “Boys Night Out” events that raised money for charity. His kindness, humour, and presence left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” perfectly captures Melvyn’s spirit as a confident man of independence, self‑determination, and pride. He lived life on his own terms and was unapologetic for who he was. He will be remembered as a trailblazer who paved his own path. He didn’t follow trends or pretend to be someone he wasn’t. He was comfortable in his own skin and a natural leader. He was someone you would want in your corner and he would always have your back when needed. We will always remember and love him for the beautiful person he was. He lived life to the fullest.
Remembering Me with Smiles by Michael Landon is how Mel will be remembered:
Remember me with smiles and laughter, For that's the way I'll remember you all. If you can only remember me with tears, then don't remember me at all.
In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations in Melvyn’s memory may be made to the Baycrest Alzheimer’s Foundation to support research and programs that help older adults and their families.
