Maureen passed away peacefully in her 70th year at Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto with her husband Rick, son Michael, and family by her side. Throughout her three-and-a-half-year battle with ALS, she consistently exhibited remarkable strength, grace, and an indomitable spirit that was an inspiration to all who knew her.
Maureen was a cherished mother, sister, leader, and a loyal friend.
A lifelong Torontonian, Maureen's foundational years were spent at St. John's Elementary School and Notre Dame High School. Her passion for learning led her to the University of Toronto, where she initially earned a degree in Political Science, cultivating a lifelong interest in social justice and public affairs. Drawn to the classroom and the desire to mentor young minds, she later returned to complete Teacher’s College, embarking on a fulfilling career as an educator.
Maureen was a devoted high school religion teacher, known for her thoughtful approach and ability to connect with her students. She shared her wisdom and guidance across several schools within the Catholic District School Board, including Bishop Morocco/Thomas Merton and Dante Alighieri Academy.
Maureen had a rich and vibrant life centered around family and friends, and enjoyed every day she was given. As an avid cook, she loved to bring people together over a meal. A true patron of the arts, she found immense joy in music and theatre, and her adventurous spirit fueled her love of travel and fun. Maureen was also deeply academically inclined, a devoted reader who could engage in thoughtful discussion on nearly any subject. Above all, she was a fierce and unwavering supporter of social justice, living her life by the principles of compassion and equity.
She is lovingly remembered and survived by her devoted husband, Rick; her beloved son, Michael; and her adored granddaughter, Aoife. She also leaves behind her brother, John, and her sisters, Vivian, Eileen, and Joan, along with many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends who will miss her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the ALS Society of Canada, to support research and patient care.
