Maryke (Marijke) Roest (née van Pampus)
Peacefully, June 5, 2026, at age 90 with family at her side and surrounded by love. Dear wife of 61 years of Dirk (deceased 2019). Dedicated mother of Sylvia (Anthony), Marlene, Rick (Celene) and Mark (April). Precious Oma of Jason (Amy), Bridgett, Jarryd (Leah), Mitchell, Jenny (Cody), Emily and Nolan. Loving great-grandmother to Lochlin, Ava and Zoe. Maryke was a cherished sister of: Ton, Hans, Joke, Carrel, and Toos (deceased); and Trees, Rob, and Ronald.
Maryke was a University of Toronto alumna (2009) and enjoyed conversing in five languages. She valued her many friendships including Yvonne (her cousin and lifelong friend), Rolande (42-year friendship), Cheryl (like family); Wendy, Diana and all her neighbours on and near De Grassi Street, the Wednesday hikers, weekly coffee shop group, Helen and fitness class companions, monthly dim sum group, Ann and theatre companions, previous work colleagues and, Maryann and travel friends. She was adventurous and outgoing and her travels included Antarctica, Arctic (rafted the Nahanni River), Tibet, Africa (climbed Mt. Kenya), Tahiti, Australia (tennis silver medalist at World Masters Games), Caribbean islands and the Netherlands (often bringing family members).
We are reminded daily of Maryke’s generosity - she loved seeing her generational keepsakes treasured in her children's homes. Maryke was principled, determined, and approached life's challenges with strength and positivity. We miss her wisdom and guidance and cherish her advice for a happy life: "travel, exercise, and make every moment gezellig".
Deep gratitude is extended to Dr. Sheila Wijayasinghe whose care supported Maryke to live a healthy and active life and to William Laurie whose care guided her in life-long learning.
The family will receive friends for a Celebration of Life at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road (east gate entrance), from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, September 19th. If desired, donations may be made to St. Michael's Hospital Foundation.
