It is with deep sadness that the family of Maria Josefina Oliveira, affectionately known as Fina, announce her passing on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026 at the age of 82. She was surrounded by the warmth and love of her family during her final moments.
Fina was born on June 1, 1943 in Alcácer do Sal, Portugal to António and Espirituosa Galrão. On June 24, 1962 she married the love of her life Luis Oliveira, who passed away on September 22, 2019. Together they shared 57 beautiful years of marriage.
Their love story was one of courage, sacrifice, and devotion. Their union was arranged by proxy while Luis was serving in the army in Africa. Just a few months later, Fina bravely set out alone on a month-long journey to join him in Mozambique, Africa. There they began their life together in army camps living in log huts. They remained there for five years before returning to Portugal.
In 1968, they immigrated to Toronto, Ontario with two small children, one suitcase, and very little money. Through hard work, resilience, and unwavering determination, they built a beautiful life together. Fina began working as a maid at the Sutton Place Hotel and through dedication and perseverance, advanced to Supervisor and later Executive Housekeeper at The Park Plaza Hotel.
Fina's life was defined with strength, courage, and never ending love, full of kindness and joy. She was the heart of her family, a steady presence, and a source of warmth and comfort to all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed by her children, Luis António Oliveira and Sofia Paula Oliveira; her son-in-law Derrick Kurz; her grandchildren, Sofia and husband Kyle Boyd, Natasha and husband Marco Moutinho, and Ashley Goletz-Svensson and husband Conrad Svensson; along with her great-grandchildren Amber and Grayson Boyd, and Noah and Scarlett Moutinho.
We also remember her siblings, Paula and her late husband Jose Monteiro both deceased who encouraged the family to immigrate here along with her remaining family António his wife Manuela Galrão and their children Nuno and Jennifer (Jenny) Galrão, and Victor and his wife Palmira Galrão and their children Victor Galrão (deceased) and Alexandra (Xana) Goncalves. On her husband’s side of the family, she is also remembered by her sister-in-law Lucinda Oliveira beloved wife of her deceased brother-in-law António Oliveira, and their children, Sonia Vieira and Joaquim (Joe) Oliveira.
Fina’s heart held a very special place for her best friend of 81 years, Teresa Roque whom she loved as a sister. Teresa Roque and her husband Walter Roque, were an integral part of her life. Fina's family would like to share the profound and lasting impact their friendship had on both Fina and Luis Oliveira throughout their lives.
Fina leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and devotion that will live on in all who were blessed to know her. Please join the family at her Memorial Service to celebrate Fina's life on April 6, 2026 at Meadowvale Funeral Center, 7732 Mavis Road Brampton, Ontario.
