Maria Ferreira Belo, a beloved and formidable matriarch whose life was defined by her tireless dedication, self-sacrifice, deep love, and unyielding family devotion, passed away in Brampton, Ontario, on March 17, 2026, at the age of 89.

Born on August 14, 1936, on the island of Madeira, Portugal, she immigrated to Toronto with her husband (Manuel Belo) and 3 children in 1965 with courage and the hope of building a new life while preserving the rich traditions of her beloved Madeira, Portugal.

Maria was the embodiment of immigrant hard work—she poured her energy into every task, from her jobs to managing her household, always pushing through with quiet determination, focus and grit.

She was loving and nurturing through a strict hand and homemade Portuguese comfort food that was the center of all gatherings. She held high expectations for order, wanting her children to thrive and do better. She forgave quickly, encouraged endlessly, and loved fiercely without conditions. Her greatest treasure was her family.

Maria is survived by her five cherished sons: Rui (Barbara), Esty (OiWah), Manuel, Jimmy (Donna), and Danny (Betty); her nine adored grandchildren: Krystal (Barry), Kyle, Rachel (Sergio), Sarah (Braden), Jacob (Katie) , Ian, Paige, Evan and Dean; and her six precious great-grandchildren: Hannah, Joey, Lewis, Liam, Ruth and Leland.

Her legacy of resilience, strict yet compassionate guidance and boundless unconditional love will continue to shape and strengthen her family for generations. Maria was predeceased by Manuel Belo Sr in January 1997. She will be profoundly missed by her loving heartbroken family.
