It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Man Fan Ho, on June 12, 2026, at the age of 76. After a brief fight with pancreatic cancer, he passed away peacefully in his sleep at North York General Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.
Born to Chi Ho and Shui Yin Kwok, he grew up in Hong Kong alongside his siblings, Hung Fan, Kwok Fan, and Mei Fan. At the age of 18, he moved to Montreal to begin his university studies. After earning his Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) from McGill University in 1973, he pursued his passion for medicine at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1977. He then completed his postgraduate medical training, obtaining his Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1982.
He worked as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at North York General Hospital for 35 years, where he was a highly respected clinician, as well as a dedicated mentor and teacher. Throughout his career, his patients always came first, and he made it a lifelong priority to ensure they received the best possible care. A leader in his field, he served as the Acting Chief of the department in 1998, co-founded the hospital's genetics program in 1983, and sat on the Board of Governors of the NYGH Foundation from 1994 to 2003. He also shared his expertise as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto, until his retirement at the end of 2017.
Man Fan was a devoted husband to Desiree for 48 years, and a loving, supportive father to Elaine and Derek. Despite his demanding medical career, he always made his family his absolute priority. He was fully present in their lives, even joining in on violin lessons when Elaine first began playing so they could learn together. Winters were filled with family ski day-trips, where he cherished hitting the slopes with his children, while holidays were dedicated to creating lasting memories together on family vacations. He provided his children with a foundation of unconditional love, quiet wisdom, and a profound sense of security.
In his spare time, Man Fan enjoyed tennis and golf, and could often be found on the courts or the green multiple times a week. He also had a passion for travel, taking full advantage of his retirement to explore the world.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Desiree (née Wu); his children, Elaine and Derek; and his siblings, Hung Fan, Kwok Fan, and Mei Fan. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Mike Gevaert; his sisters-in-law, Bessie and Karen; and his brother-in-law, Ramsey Cheng. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chi in 1967 and Shui Yin in 2018.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the North York General Hospital Foundation, designated to the Birthing Centre:
