It is with heavy hearts to report the passing of Loukas Papaioannou, late husband of Athina Papaioannou and brother to George Papaioannou and Katina Anastasopoulos and brother-in-law to Andreas Anastasopoulos and the late, Stella Papaioannnou. After a brief illness, Loukas passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the age of 90.
Loukas was born on November 19, 1925 in the village of Karya, Elassonas, Greece. He was the eldest son of Yianni Papaioannou and Eleni Karaziakos. Loukas enjoyed spending time with his immediate and extended family. In his early years Loukas was heavily involved with the Greek Resistance ( E.L.A.S.). He later moved to Poland where he married Athina and continued to live and work there for 20 years. In the late 1960s he immigrated to Canada to live the remainder part of his life close to his immediate family and soon thereafter brought to Canada, Athina’s niece, Milka, who they raised as their own, until she married Shukri Juri and started their own life. Athina’s niece Sophia and her husband Pavlos Karatsoreas were also an important part of Loukas’ life and he enjoyed their company.
As a newcomer to Canada, he began working as a machinist and later opened a successful restaurant in downtown Toronto. In the latter part of his working years, he returned to his original machinist trade. Finally in his late 60s, he retired and enjoyed many summer holidays with family and friends in Greece.
He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife, Athina, his brother, George, and his children, Yianni and Litsa and his sister Katina and her husband Andreas and their children, George, Helen and Joanne. Loukas was also very fortunate to have had the pleasure of so many of his siblings’ grandchildren and Athina’s nieces’ children and grandchildren who surrounded him with love and affection throughout his life. A cherished, “Papou” was he to Melissa, Holly, Peter, Zoe, Zachary, Tessa, Andrew, Ria and Lazos and loving “Dedo” to Natasha and Christine. Loukas was also fortunate to have been blessed by great grandchildren, Matthew, Nicholas, Benjamin, Madeline, Zoe and Paulo.
He will forever be remembered for his kindness, sense of humour, honesty and sincerity. He was a, “gentle giant” and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
