Lila Joy Robertson
May 7, 1928 - October 27, 2015
Robertson, Lila Joy (nee Stickney) 1928-2015
After a courageous battle with cancer, Lila passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 27th with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her beloved Richard (February 2015) and her brother Homer. She is survived by her two children, Susan (David) and John (Mary Jo), her six grandchildren, Mark (Nicolle), John (Allison), Meredith, Sarah (Jordan), Matthew, David, her great granddaughter, Elliott Joy, and her brother Charlie. She will be fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews and cousins. Lila cherished her family and lived to support, encourage and mostly to love us all.
Lila's father died when she was 6 months old. Her mother then moved the young family from the farm in Wellington County to Fergus, Ontario. A child of the Depression, Lila learned to be resourceful, determined and care for others. After graduating High School she taught in a one-room school house for two years and then attended Toronto Normal School in the Primary Specialist program. She taught Kindergarten in Niagara Falls, before marrying Richard in 1951.
Lila and Richard spent 63 years together in Toronto. Lila returned to teaching once her children were of school age. She spent the rest of her career teaching with the North York Board. She was passionate about her profession and cared deeply about her students. She enjoyed the camaraderie among her colleagues, particularly at Sloane Ave. P.S. Lila was active in the UCW at Victoria Village United Church and served as the Sunday School coordinator for several years. It was important to her to organize fun activities and dinners to bring people together.
Lila volunteered immediately after retiring from teaching with the CNIB for over 10 years and then with the Better Living Centre until she became ill this summer.
Lila and Richard enjoyed cottage life, travelling and entertaining friends and relatives. She was proud of her cooking and baking, and everyone always looked forward to a plate of her homemade squares at the end of a meal. She cared about her community and delivered homemade soups and baking to neighbours who were ill.
Lila looked on the bright side of life, met heartbreak and adversity with grace, saw the humour in life's little moments and faced her death with dignity. She will be greatly missed, but will be remembered as a role model for us all.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Lo and the team at The Freeman Centre For Palliative Care at North York General Hospital for their care and compassion.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to The Freeman Centre For Palliative Care, North York General Hospital or The Hospital for Sick Children would be appreciated. Donations may be made through www.etouch.ca
At Lila's request, cremation has taken place and a private family internment has been arranged. Family and friends are invited to a gathering in honour of Lila and Richard on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at The Simple Alternative Funeral Centre, 275 Lesmill Rd., North York (401/Leslie St.)
