Lida Merle Hannaford
December 20, 1930 - May 16, 2015
HANNAFORD, Lida Merle (nee Shields)
1930-2015
Our mother passed peacefully on May 16, 2015, in her 85th year, in Toronto. Beloved wife of Derek Hannaford (1930-2004) and loving mother to Hal Hannaford (Susan Doherty), Craig Hannaford (Susan Clarke) and Karen Hannaford. She will be dearly missed by her seven grandchildren: Lauren, Alana, Alisse, Kelsey, Reid, Meaghan and Grant. Merle is predeceased by her sister Helen Napier-Andrews, her brother, Charles Shields, and her identical twin sister, Marilyn Shields. Merle met our father, Derek, while studying nursing at Montreal's Royal Victoria Hospital. They were married for almost fifty years and lived for most of that time in Montreal. Family always came first and she and Derek raised us in a loving and warm home. She was an amazing cook, revered for her ability to host large dinners on short notice and loved gatherings with her many girlfriends. Mom was a true lover of the outdoors. Some of her happiest days were spent in Kennebunk Beach, Maine at her much cherished summer home and Lech, Austria, skiing with family and friends. She was a long time member of Montreal's Twin Ski Club, and loved playing tennis, golf and bridge.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caring staff of the Amica/ Balmoral Club. Their kindness and thoughtfulness are greatly appreciated.
A memorial service will take place at the Chapel of the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, (east gate entrance, north of St. Clair Ave, 416-485-5572) on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
