Lavinia Smith
August 20, 1928 - November 21, 2014
Lavinia Yvette “Aubergine” Smith
(August 20, 1928 – November 21, 2014)
Wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandma, friend, hard worker, wit, raconteur, serial hugger, incorrigible flirt.
Died peacefully at Centenary Hospital, surrounded by family, after a long struggle with congestive heart disease. Beloved wife and best friend of the gentlemanly and drily-witty Robert Arthur Smith, to whom Lavinia was married for 52 years and who predeceased her in 2002. Fiercely loving and intelligent mother of Christine, Ian and Barbara. Non-meddling mother-in-law to Derek and Nancy. Wise Nana to Ryan and Devon Lever and Ryan’s wife Sandra, and to Connor and Megan Smith. Pooped great-grandmother to young Miss Addison and Alexia. Indulgent auntie to Bob and Ron and their wives Val and Elizabeth. Fun-loving, prank-pulling sister of Alf and Barbara. Fond sister-in-law to Frank and his wife Katie, Phil and Dorrie. Adventure-seeking accomplice and co-pilot to best friend Marianne. Prized pal of Beryl and Jim, Doug and Joyce, Keith and Alan, Shandra and Roy, Beryl Farraday, Dawn Pilgrim, Frank and Ruth, and innumerable others in England, Sudbury, Welland and Pickering. Surrogate mum to many of her kids’ childhood friends, including Betty Ann, Paula, Doreen, Martina, Richard, Scott, Alan and Richard D. Rescuer of sad pets, most recently Muffin, who spent six years in a shelter before Lavinia saw in her what others had not. Giver of treats to the family’s pets, including Reg, Bea, Marmie and Mojo. Intelligent, charming and quick-witted patient of Dr. Piyal Walpola, Dr. Jason Burstein, Dr. Marietta Zorn and Dr. Gustavo Azoubel and their caring and efficient staff Ruth, Michelle and Monica. Favourite customer of every waiter and store clerk Livvy encountered. Well-liked, respected and independent patient of Ravi and many of the nurses, personal support workers and support staff at Ajax-Pickering and Centenary Hospitals. World traveller before TripAdvisor. Enthusiastic reader of British murder mysteries and literary fiction. Fan of tea-and-crumpets dramas and Jason Bourne action movies alike. Enthusiastic admirer of dishy actors, including but not limited to: Mark Harmon, Johnny Depp, Daniel Craig, Mark Walhberg, Matt Damon, Jason Statham, Tom Selleck, George Clooney, David Tennant and especially James Garner, whose sly wit, roguish charm and striking resemblance to Livvy’s husband Bob were impossible to ignore. Bain of call centre operators and customer service VPs. Livvy reserved special disdain for greedy, overpaid CEOs, self-serving politicians and people who try to game the system.
Memorial donations gratefully accepted by: Second Chance Animal Sanctuary (2060 Concession Rd. #7, Pickering, Ontario, Canada L1Y 1A2; Tel: 905-649-8282), or the animal welfare organization of your choice.
