Larraine Patricia Hilson (“La”) was a loving wife, mom, grandmother, sister and friend. She left us too soon on 2 January 2026 at age 77.
She was born to Marjorie and John Hussain on 11 July 1948. After completing her A-Levels in Trinidad, La moved to Canada, in 1968, to study a degree in languages, at Laurentian University in Sudbury. It was here where she met her husband, Mike Hilson, in late-October 1968. Together, they had three children: Gavin, Andrew and Christopher.
No one on this Earth had a bigger heart than La. She constantly worried about friends and family, and always played the role of peacemaker. It seemed that every day, she was buying someone a birthday gift, baking someone a cheesecake, or calling someone to check up on them. She was the most selfless person we knew, always putting others ahead of her.
A true Hussain, La enjoyed telling stories (typically prefaced with her famous phrase, “let me tell you a joke”); talking politics (especially dissing Trump); sharing experiences from her native Trinidad and Tobago; and watching sports, particularly baseball and football. She had a flair for languages, taught all of the children in the neighborhood how to read, was a skilled piano player in her day, and read absolutely everything. La was all about Jane Austen (every time she visited England, she would visit her house) and 1940s and 1950s classic movies. She was the best wife, mom, grandmother, sister and friend!
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 am on 8 January 2026 at The Simple Alternative, 1535 South Gateway Road. You are in our hearts forever, La!
