In Loving Memory of Luk Lee Lai Fong (陸李麗芳)
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Friend
With deep sorrow and cherished memories, we announce the passing of our mother, Luk Lee Lai Fong (陸李麗芳), on February 11, 2026, at Markham Stouffville Hospital, Markham, Ontario, at the remarkable age of 97.
Born in Tai Ning village, Hai Zhu Qu, Guangzhou (廣州市海珠區泰寧村), with ancestral roots in PanYu (番禺), China. Our mother was devoted, generous, and always put her family's needs ahead of her own. Her strength and resilience helped her meet every challenge with bravery and grace. She inspired us all, and her absence will be felt deeply by everyone she touched.
She was cherished for her warmth, laughter, and steadfast encouragement. She found joy in simple things—family gatherings, preparing beloved dishes, enjoying Chinese music, pop songs and opera, playing mahjong with loved ones, traveling with her children across the globe, and caring for others. Her wisdom, compassion, and gentle nature guided us through difficulties as well as successes.
While her early years were shadowed by profound loss. She bravely assumed responsibility for her family when she was only 8 years old, shortly after the birth of her younger brother, stepping in as caretaker and fishmonger after the passing of her parents. Despite her love for learning, she sacrificed her education to raise her two younger brothers, earning their lifelong gratitude.
After overcoming adversity, she worked in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. In 1949, she married her beloved husband, Shing-Huen Luk, in Hong Kong, embarking on a life together that saw them raise six children. As the family grew, she transitioned from homemaker to working mother, starting as a dishwasher, and later finding greater opportunity in an artificial flower factory. Her diligence and kindness led to a promotion as team leader, and she was trusted to bring work home, offering her children a chance to earn their own pocket money.
Recognizing the need for better wages to support the family, she moved to a textile factory, enduring rotating shifts, and challenging overnight hours. Her unwavering commitment ensured her children’s needs always came first, often at the expense of her own well-being. She never complained, always prioritizing food, clothing, and education for her family.
In 1979, with one son studying in the US, she immigrated to Canada with her husband and daughters, joined her other two sons and daughters-in-law in Ottawa, and later moved to Toronto. There, she worked as a Dim Sum lady while supporting her children’s education and careers. Meanwhile she enjoyed attending the adult school for English and citizenship preparation and making new friends in the classroom, ultimately earning Canadian citizenship. As her children achieved independence, she continued to maintain a disciplined approach to earning and saving, and transitioned into retirement focused on family, travel, recreational mahjong, and the enjoyment of Chinese pop songs, opera and music. Her preferred artist was Ren Jian Hui (任劍輝), and her favored song was Di Nu Hua (帝女花), which she appreciated to the extent that she frequently encouraged others to join her in singing it.
She is survived by her brother, sister-in-law, 6 children, 3 sons-in-law, 2 daughters-in-law (having lost one in May 2025), 11 grandchildren, 3 grandsons-in-law, 5 grand daughters-in-law, and 9 great-grandchildren. Her warmth, resilience, and unwavering devotion will forever remain in our hearts. Though she may be gone, her memory will continue to inspire and comfort us.
We invite friends and extended family to honor her and join us at a Celebration of Life Gathering on February 28th. She will be laid to rest beside our late father at York Cemetery. Service and reception details are provided below.
