Lachlan was born on a sunny July day in Clydebank, Scotland, the pride and joy of Mary Ann and Henry (Harry) McDonald. Shortly, a younger brother James arrived, completing the family as they survived the toughest conditions during World War II.
After finishing Clydebank Secondary School, Lachlan earned an Industrial Engineering degree from Stowe College. He enjoyed playing sports and sports cars, and for a while played semi-pro football for a team that would eventually become a part of the Glasgow Rangers. His fondest memories were made with his best friend Sam, and while no pictures survive of their wild times together, we are sure if Instagram and Tik-Tok had existed then, they would have gone viral.
Lachlan once sat next to Brigitte Bardot (a super star in her prime at that time) on a flight, a fun fact he shared with pride. He enjoyed dancing and at one such dance, met his future beloved wife, Margaret (nee Bruce). The two would remain together for the next sixty years. Following a beautiful wedding on February 1st, they left Scotland for Canada and embarked on a new life together. He always stayed in touch with his mother and extended family in Scotland, visiting frequently.
Lachlan and Margaret were soon joined by Craig, and they moved to a brand new and bright home with a big garden in Brampton, that kept them busy for the next half century. Any given Sunday you would hear Lachlan tinkering in the garage, when not tending to the garden. Craig was Lachlan’s pride and joy, and his loss to cancer in 2024 was unbearable for him.
In retirement, Margaret and Lachlan travelled all over Europe, and the Caribbean. At home, he was proud to make turkey for his grandson, a tradition that Aydin will carry forward. Lachlan is survived by his wife Margaret, best friend Sam, grandson Aydin, daughter-in-law Elif, sister-in-law Margaret, nephew Graeme, niece Laura, and their extended families.
Lachlan would have thought this was a bit too much, but one cannot end this memorial without highlighting that at his last hospital stay when he arrived in emergency following a collapse and diagnosed with a heart attack, pneumonia and sepsis, it took three male nurses to restrain him and put in the IV. He fought for his freedom, valiantly!
God speed, Lachlan, you lived a meaningful, good life and have left a spectacular legacy.
