Kum Hung Li was born on May 11, 1928, in Hong Kong. He was the second child in his family, with one older sister and two younger brothers. He experienced World War II during his childhood. After peace, he obtained his driver's license at the young age of 16 and worked as a driver for his father's freight company, later becoming a tour bus driver.
In 1953, at the age of 25, he married Lau Kam Lan, who was five years younger than him. They had four children: eldest son Edwin, second daughter Eva, third son Steven, and fourth son Alex. They also have six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In 1997, he immigrated to Canada with his family to enjoy his retirement.
He loved to travel, his travels taking him to Australia, Europe, the United States, and Canada. He particularly enjoyed traveling to China to sample its diverse cuisine. He possessed a rich sense of humor and loved telling jokes to make others laugh. Although he did not have the opportunity for a higher education, he was upright, honest, and gentle, never scolding or abusing his children, making him a model of a loving father. He placed great emphasis on his children's education, and even though Hong Kong did not yet have universal free education, he was willing to bear various financial and living burdens to ensure his children received a good education.
He was truly an outstanding father and husband, remembered fondly by family and friends for his kindness, honesty, and sense of humor.
