With great sadness, we announce the passing of Kim Hong Tan, who passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, at 87 years of age, at Scarborough General Hospital. His wife, Sophia was loyally by his side until his passing.
Kim was born in Singapore in 1938 and grew up on Singapore River Road. He attended Outram Park School and left Singapore when he was 19 to attend college in Melbourne, Australia. It was there that he met his wife, Sophia and they immigrated to Toronto, Canada and were married in 1967.
Kim was a civil engineer, first working for the City of Toronto in planning, then at Proctor and Redfern, an engineering consultancy until his retirement.
He enjoyed travel and went on many trips to Asia and particularly enjoyed touring China which he visited twice a year in his retirement. He also enjoyed cruises with Sophia and went on more than 30 cruises all over the world in his retirement years.
Kim is survived by his wife, Sophia Tan, his children and their spouses: Kevin and Monika Tan, Genevieve and Kevin Ko and his grandchildren, Madeline Tan, Eric Tan, Alexander Tan, Ethan Ko, Michelle Ko, and Nathaniel Ko, his sister Siew Eng Tan and his niece and nephew Otilia Koo and Gerard Koo.
