Kenneth L. Pond
September 16, 1930 - May 2, 2013
Pond, Kenneth Lawrence.
In his 83rd year, Kenneth Lawrence Pond died on May 2, 2013. Ken had the well-earned blessing of a loving family, both his immediate one and those of his siblings. Ken had the great gift of appreciation of his family and friends and a deep desire to serve those he loved. He was a clever, kind and gentle man who will never be forgotten.
Ken is survived by Joan (Compton) his loving wife of 58 years – and best friend. Also left to mourn are their three adored daughters and their husbands whom he looked on as sons: Janet Pond - White and Bentley White, Allison Pond and Earl D. Aslin and Christine Pond and Jacek Sobocinski. And there were, of course, the jewels in his crown, his three grandchildren Ethelle and Beatrice White and Callum Sobocinski to all of whom Ken was a very special “Papa”!
He is also survived, in love and devotion, by his twin sister, Lois Crofoot (Robert W.), his elder sister, Thora (John L. Harvey) his brother C. Richard Pond (Robert Archer) and his sister-in-law, Rose Pond and 9 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his baby son, Andrew and by his older brother, Murray C. Pond.
Ken was born in Simcoe Ontario to Claude Walker Pond and his wife Ida Helena (Hare) Pond. After graduating from The University of Toronto, Ken went on to join The Federal Public Service Commission in Toronto. In 1960, he was transferred to Ottawa where the children were born and where they lived for 31 years. Ken enjoyed a distinguished career, the highlights of which were his years in the Bureau of Management Consulting, and his appointment to the year-long Programme of Bilingualism and Biculturalism with his family.
Retiring in 1984, he served for 7 years as Executive Director of an Ottawa NGO. In 1993 Ken and Joan left Ottawa to return to southern Ontario, to Jordan and then, in 2004, to Toronto.
Ken spent the last three years of his life at Runnymede Health Centre. The family would like to thank that wonderful facility. We can never truly repay the loving kindness and devoted professionalism of the nurses and other frontline workers there.
The funeral service will take place at 1:00pm, Tuesday May 7th, 2013 at St. James Chapel, 635 Parliament St, T.O. 416-964-9194. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Runnymede Health Care Centre, in honour of nursing staff would be appreciated.
