Katherine Inge Augustine
June 16, 1956 - October 5, 2014
Kathy passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, with her children, Jonah and Haley, by her side. She is also survived by her father George, her siblings Frank and Janet, as well as many friends and family. We will all miss her dearly. Kathy grew up in Toronto and studied nursing at Ryerson, where she received her Diploma in Nursing in 1977 and, upon returning, her Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1991. She spent the majority of her professional career (1985-2011) working as a labour and delivery nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. She is remembered among her colleagues for her extraordinary skill, judgment, and, above all, compassion. In 1999, Kathy received her Master of Science-Nursing degree from the University of Toronto. Her thesis was titled, “Preservative Managing while Spiralling Downward: The Experiences of Nurses Who Care for Women in Labour and Delivery in a Time of Hospital Restructuring.” During her academic career, she was an avid scholar of nursing history, with a particular interest in the relationship between the theoretical and the clinical components of nursing care. She took the opportunity to share her wealth of experience and insight with a younger generation of nurses by working as a nursing instructor at Ryerson (2000-2002) and a clinical instructor at the University of Toronto (2010-2011). Late in life, Kathy indulged her passion for travel and visited Russia, Peru, Bolivia, Ireland, Germany, and St. Maarten, often with Haley and Jonah along for the adventure. Kathy leaves behind a wonderful legacy of love and care for others. It is a legacy that those who loved her best will attempt to carry on.
