Karl-Heinz Michael Pfeiffer was a devoted husband, father, and proud Opa—a man who found his greatest joy in family. Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, he emigrated to Canada in 1952 with his parents Rose and Michael Pfeiffer. He was a loving big brother to his sisters, Lorie (Paul) Tiffin and Heidi Larabee, and was predeceased by his treasured brother-in-law, Rob Larabee.
Karl was married to his beloved wife, Ruth, for 44 years, sharing a partnership built on love, commitment, and adventure. He was a devoted dad to Karell (Kevvy), Kyle (Rebecca), and Rebecca (Nick), and an immensely proud Opa to his six grandchildren: Elliot, Willow, Klara, Katherine, Layla, and Sean. Being called “Opa” meant the world to him, and he wore that title with enormous pride.
Friendly, funny, and endlessly hardworking, Karl had a gift for making people feel welcome. He was a wonderful neighbour who quickly turned strangers into friends through his warmth and humour.
He took great pride in the life he built through honest work. Karl began his career as a heating and air conditioning mechanic before spending 31 years as a building inspector with the City of Toronto. Along the way, he formed many lasting friendships with coworkers, contractors, and tradespeople—friends who demonstrated their loyalty until the very end.
Karl was exceptionally handy. “Opa can fix it” was a common refrain from his grandchildren. From adding a second storey to the family home to repairing lawnmowers rescued from the side of the road, he could do it all.
Music was another great love of his life. Though he insisted he was a music collector, not a record collector, Karl amassed more than 15,000 albums over the years. From his early “various” cassettes to a collection of over 1,000 CDs, there was always music playing.
Karl’s favourite place was the family cottage on Mountain Lake in Minden, Ontario. It was a gathering place for everyone he loved, and he was happiest when the cottage was full and bursting at the seams.
Above all, Karl was a good man—honest, honourable, and courageous. His legacy lives on in the family he adored, the homes and places he built, the friendships he formed so easily, and the many lives made better simply by knowing him.
Friends are invited to attend a gathering on Saturday, February 21st, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with the celebration of life beginning at 2 p.m. at Pine Hills Funeral Center. The family is grateful for the love and support shown by friends. If so desired, donations can be made to The Salvation Army North York Temple or Parkinson’s Canada.
