Karen Mayne
January 17, 1956 - May 4, 2014
It is with deep sadness to announce Karen Mayne passed away peacefully on Sunday May 4th surrounded by her family at Sunnybrook Hospital after a more than four year fight with cancer.
Karen will be remembered by her loving family that she leaves behind: her loving husband Vince, son Ian and daughter-in-law Aisha, son Andrew and girlfriend Beth, son Michael and girlfriend Andrea. Karen will also be remembered by her younger sister Susan and husband John Mah and their sons Chris and Jeff; her youngest sister Wendy, husband Marvin Merner and sons Jonathon, Sean and Matthew; and her nieces Kate Brown and Liz Elliott and nephew Phil Brown. In addition to her sisters, her older brother Jeff Tyndall and her parents Keith and Phyllis Tyndall still live in her birth town of Clinton, Ontario. Cheryl Brown, her older sister, pre-deceases her.
Karen was born in Clinton Ontario and studied nursing at Conestoga College in Guelph, Ontario. Karen moved to Toronto in the late 70’s to work in a downtown Toronto Hospital. She later studied Sciences at York University and completed a Masters of Education at University of Central Michigan University; all while raising three energetic boys and being active in her community!
Karen’s career in the health care field extended over 38 years and concluded with the Rouge Valley Healthcare System and Director of Quality in Nursing and a frequently interacted with the Board of Directors on critical matters.
Karen lived life to the fullest and enjoyed many different interests. She loved to travel and ventured as far as U.K., Europe, South America, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. She had a great appreciation for music and sang in her church choir. She loved reading, running, biking, walks with the dogs and coffee with girlfriends, but most of all sharing a good meal and great laughs with her family.
Karen’s enthusiasm for fitness spilled over into signing up for the annual 200 plus kilometer Ride to Conquer Cancer in aid of cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Karen fundraised over $10 000 for cancer research, built teams to join her on the ride and successfully completed 3 annual rides. Her intended ride in June 2014 will be completed by her husband in her memory.
We wish to thank all of Karen’s family and friends who were so supportive during her illness. Her friends freely gave up their time for hospital visits and doctor appointments. Karen was also joined by many close friends and family on vacations between treatments that spanned over 4 years.
Again, Karen was a huge supporter of developing and educating nurses for front line duty in the Canadian healthcare system and has established a nursing bursary to further this cause. The bursary will benefit from your financial contribution in lieu of flowers.
