GATES, June Ross (née Hiltz) –
Peacefully, October 28, 2013, at age 96. With much love, we celebrate the long and abundant life of June. Dear wife of 64 years of Douglas (deceased 2007). Beloved mother of Doug Jr. (Sue) and Gord (Lumi). Precious Grandma of Rob (Janet), Laura (Aaron), Geoff (Rebecca) and Amy. Great-grandmother of Charlotte and Evelyn. Enduringly youthful and vivacious, she was the last living child of former Toronto mayor William Wesley Hiltz and his wife Annie Laidlaw. June was the sister of five older siblings and her identical twin Jean. In 1930s Toronto, the Hiltz twins were socially renowned for their wit, charm and surpassing beauty. June grew up swimming in Lake Couchiching, playing piano, adoring cats, and cherishing her Hiltz family connections.
A war bride, June was a supportive wife and loving mother. A wonderful story teller, her hobby was writing. Her sons fondly recall cottage summers with her entertaining their friends and tolerating their adventures with excellent humour. For 60 summers, she and Doug cottaged at Beaverton on Lake Simcoe and in later years wintered in Sarasota. June was an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church for over 60 years.
The family will receive friends at the Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre 375 Mount Pleasant Road (east gate entrance) from 7-9 pm. on Friday November 1st. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel at 2:00 pm on Saturday November 2nd. If desired, donations may be made to Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation.
