John Ng, 59, passed away peacefully in the early hours of February 6, 2013 at the Toronto General Hospital. Born on August 29, 1953 in Hong Kong, John was the eldest son of Joseph and Mary (Lam) Ng, beloved husband of over 25 years to Esther Yiu, and loving father to Jennifer and Joanna. He will be greatly missed by his extended family and a large cohort of close friends.
John spent most of his childhood and working years in Hong Kong. He held a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) degree in Economics from the University of Hong Kong. Upon graduation, he began his career in high finance as a commodity futures specialist with Richardson Securities of Canada, the leading Canadian investment dealer at the time. Subsequently, he rose to Assistant Vice President & Co-head of the Commodities Department in the Hong Kong Branch. In 1983, he joined the brokerage subsidiary of HSBC bank as General Manager to set up the Bullion, Foreign Exchange and Commodities trading operation for its private clients in Asia. From 1985 to 1999, he was the Vice President and Director of the Bank of America Capital Markets Group. In 1999, John and his family immigrated to Canada where he continued his career. In 2010, John decided to retire in pursuit of a more flexible and leisurely lifestyle.

John’s career accomplishments were strongly mirrored in his personal life. His passion and vitality was most recently channeled into ping pong. Although an amateur, his youthful exuberance and competitive zeal drove him to play as often as four times a week. John was clearly a quick study and soon went on to a string of victories in his recreational league.

While John certainly appreciated competition, he also knew how to enjoy the finer things in life. Together with his wife, Esther, they travelled the world. He loved to explore new cultures, try different cuisines, and was always a connoisseur of the best gourmet foods.

In addition to these colorful exploits, perhaps John will be remembered most for his kind heart, his warm generosity, and his indomitable humor. He was a very successful financier but was not above sharing his wealth with those around him. John was best known as a bit of a comedian and was not beyond making himself the target of his own jokes. His pleasant demeanor and bright spirit were disarming and comforting to all who shared his company.

Lastly, John will be remembered most by his close circle of family and friends. John was a great family man and was always there for his wife and daughters. He moved mountains for his family and sacrificed much for their betterment and happiness. In return, he was especially proud of his children and spoke admiringly of their many accomplishments. John was well loved and cherished. He will be greatly missed to those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Sarcoma Foundation of Canada.
