JOHN ROBERT WALDEN Passed away peacefully in his 81st year at Ross Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, June 26, 2013. Loving Husband and best friend of 60 years to his Wife Ann (Emily), dear Father of Debra (John), Joanne (Bill), John (Tracey), Elizabeth (Mike), Suzanne (Tim), cherished Grandfather and Great-Grandfather of Cameron (Joanne), Emily, Lorraine (Lukasz), Sarah, Stephanie (Chase), Robert, Andrew, Victoria, James, Christina, Kiana, Shania, Grace and AJ. In 1951 John began a 41 year career in the Mechanical Engineering profession, designing building services. Design of hospitals, high schools, university buildings, research centres and federal buildings were the learning years. In 1973 he joined a Process Engineering firm, became Senior Project Manager responsible for projects across Canada and a Partner of the firm. After spending many years at their family cottage on Balsam Lake which John designed, John and Emily relocated to their second retirement home on Pigeon Lake. From 1964 to 2004 John and six close friends, former co-workers (aka "The Red Headed Wood Ducks Group), met annually for a Fall Weekend Reunion in cottage country, from the Ottawa Valley to Georgian Bay and many points in between. John read widely all of his life and had a deep interest in history, geography, etc., and could converse well on all subjects. He didn't "suffer fools gladly", he would say "look around you, use your eyes and see". He loved live theatre, travel, music and photography. His hobbies included building large marine models - scratch built, family photo albums and cabinet making. His board drawings of marine models were exceptional. He had a diverse knowledge of the Canadian Armed Forces in two world wars and our Canadian history in general gave him great pride of country. John retired in 1992 at 60 years of age, drawn to their home at Balsam Lake - Walden Villa. His motto in life was "I work hard to live; I do not live to work". Friends will be received at PINE HILLS CEMETERY & VISITATION CENTRE, 625 Birchmount Rd., Scarborough (north of St. Clair Ave. E., 416-267-8229) on Friday, June 28, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A service in celebration of John's life will be held in the chapel on Saturday June 29, 2013 at 2 p.m., followed by interment and a reception within Pine Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Scarborough General Hospital, Heart & Stroke Foundation and Ross Memorial Hospital.
