John was born in Leamington, Ontario, to the late John and Barbara Toth. He was predeceased by his sister Adelaide Riordan (Richard).
He is survived by his loving spouse Gabriella Karadi, his sisters Elizabeth Pearson (Ken) and Isabell Kovats (John) and his brother-in-law Peter Karadi.
He is mourned by his cousins Paul Kormos (Louise), Sylvia Mcurdy (David), Ron Oros (Eldene) and Nicholas Toth (Fiona); nephews John
Pearson (Catherine,) Michael Pearson, Richard Riordan (Chelene), niece Paula Jacoby (Neil); grand nephew and nieces Zachary, Sydney, Taylor and
Aiden Pearson and Jordan and Lisa Kovats.
John was an exceptionally skilled Jazz drummer. He began playing as a youngster at the Preston Scout House and continued during his high school
years at Eastwood Collegiate Institute in Kitchener and at University to help fund his education. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of Jazz
and of the musicians of the 1930-1950s era.
In 1965 John graduated with a BA from Waterloo Lutheran University as an Economics Major. As a highly successful investment economist specializing
in duration bond management, John worked for Crown Life Ins. Co., Sun Life Ins. Co., Wood Gundy Investment Management, becoming
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in !989. He was appointed Vice President and Portfolio Manager at TAL Global Asset Managers in 1994.
As a first quartile investment economist he considered himself a ‘total fundamentalist.’ He achieved success for his clients through his own research,
hard work, self-discipline and self-confidence, and by taking a long-term approach to investing. He greatly enjoyed his work and considered money management ‘great fun.’
His groundbreaking 1974 Financial Analysts Journal article “Forecasting Secular Trends in Long-Term Interest Rates” gained him considerable accolades.
After his retirement John continued to practice on his Slingerland, and to manage assets for family and friends. John’s interests in politics,
travel, art and science were wide ranging. And everyone who knew him appreciated his quick wit and wonderful sense of humour.
He was a kind, generous and moral sibling and friend. John was, of course, a great devotee of Hungarian culture, including cuisine, decorative arts and music.
