It is with full hearts that the family of John Philip Fisher announce his peaceful passing on August 17, 2025, at the age of 84. A man who could fill a room with laughter and would give everything for the people he loved, John leaves behind a legacy as rich and warm as the life he lived.
Born on April 22, 1941 in Birmingham, England to Philip and Gladys Fisher he grew up to join the Birmingham police then immigrated to Canada as a young adult with his own family in 1974 where he joined the Toronto Police Department. He made a home in the welcoming community of Sunderland, Ontario, where he was known as a familiar face, a good neighbour, and — more often than not — the one with the best joke in the room. Fiercely loyal and quick to laugh, John had a gift for making everyone around him feel at ease.
John dedicated 29 remarkable years to serving the people of Toronto as a police officer with 41 Division, retiring with pride as a Sergeant in 2003. His commitment to public service was not simply a career — it was a reflection of who he was at his core: someone who believed deeply in helping others and showing up when it mattered most.
In retirement, John poured that same energy into the things that brought him joy — the satisfying craft of woodworking, adventures near and far, and above all, time spent with the friends and family he treasured.
John is survived by his older sister Jeanette Bowrin (Fisher), beloved daughter Sarah Fisher-Reid (Christopher), and his son Mark Philip Fisher (Claire), along with five grandchildren who were the delight of his life: Gavan and Brandon Reid, and Andrew, Caroline, and Fiona Fisher.
All are welcome to celebrate the memory of John Philip Fisher with his son and daughter during a Celebration of Life at Thornton Funeral Centre (1200 Thornton Road North, Oshawa, 905-579-6787) on May 11, 2026 from 11:00-2:00PM. Speeches will begin at 11:30pm and anyone wishing to share their memories about John are most welcome. Food and drinks will be served.
This is a time to celebrate John's best life and be joyful for his friendship and love.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to honour John’s memory to make a donation to a charitable cause of their choosing — a fitting tribute to a man who spent his life in service to others.
A life well-lived. A laugh well-shared. Dearly missed.
