John McKay Eastwood, P. Eng
(1935-2012)
Passed away peacefully on June 2nd, surrounded by family. He is survived by his son Douglas, his daughter Janet (Brian De Ville) and his daughter, Ellen.
John will also be sadly missed by his sister Barbara Bailey and brother Alex and many nieces and nephews. John is predeceased by his father, John Hubert Eastwood of Picton, Ontario and his mother, Edith Dorothy (nee McKay) of Hamilton, Ontario.
John was born on July 14, 1935 in Hamilton, Ontario. He grew up in Peterborough, Ontario, where he attended Queen Mary Public School and served as Head Boy of PCVS High School in 1953/54.
John went on to attend the University of Toronto, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. In 1958, John graduated from U. of T. with a degree in Civil Engineering from the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.
John was married and later divorced from Victoria (nee Grinnell). Together they raised their three children in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.
John spent the majority of his career as a Senior Investment Counselor at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Technology. Following a lengthy stint in Ottawa, John enjoyed foreign postings to Expo ’86, San Francisco and London, England, before returning to Toronto, Ontario, where he retired after 25 years of service in 1998.
An avid nature lover, John generously supported environmental causes and enjoyed bird watching, hiking, sailing and canoeing at his childhood cottage on Stoney Lake. A wildlife enthusiast, he volunteered his time over the years banding hawks, rehabilitating injured sea lions and working at the Kortright Centre for Conservation.
But John was first and foremost a loving and involved father who coached the hockey team, loved corny jokes and enjoyed spending time with his children. An enthusiastic traveler, he spent the later years of his life journeying to all corners of the globe with long-time companion, Dana Hopson.
After surviving a two-year battle with Hodgkin’s Disease, John was diagnosed with Posterior Cortical Atrophy, a rare form of Alzheimer’s disease in 2009. Following his diagnosis, he took up residence in Briton House Retirement Home, where he enjoyed many friends and activities before succumbing to his illness on June 2nd. The family expresses thanks to Dr. Michael Crump of Princess Margaret Hospital, Dr. David Tang Wai at the Toronto Western Memory Clinic and Dr. Stephen Johnson, Lourdes Cardeno and the caring staff at Briton House.
A private family interment will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. A celebration of John’s life will take place on Friday, June 8th at 2:30pm at The Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
Donations in John’s memory can be made to The Nature Conservancy of Canada or The David Suzuki Foundation.
