John (Jack) W. Baker

May 17, 1925 – April 22, 2012

Jack Baker passed away peacefully early Sunday morning at home on Toronto Island. Born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England on May 17th, 1925, Jack married Barbara (Judy) Hindle on October 25th, 1946 a few days before shipping off to serve with the Sixth Airborne Regiment (Royal Signals) of the RAF in Palestine. Jack and Judy immigrated to Canada in 1954 and after 3 years in Winnipeg, moved west to Calgary, Alberta before settling in Port Credit, Ontario in 1968 to open Jack Baker Marine and become active members of Port Credit Yacht Club. In 1989 they followed their hearts to Nanaimo, British Columbia and a full and active retirement lifestyle. They enjoyed the moderate weather, breathtaking views, an abundance of friends and Jack’s role as president of the local Gyro Club until Judy’s sudden passing on October 1st, 2005. After Jack was diagnosed with lung cancer in July of 2011, he and his beloved cat Casey moved to Toronto Island to live with his daughter Susan and family. He enjoyed a quiet, comfortable life on the Island, admiring the view of the city, watching sailboats in the harbour and wildlife through the living room window. The night before his passing was spent with Susan, her partner Neil, grandson Jonathon, granddaughter Olivia and great niece Alley. He will be greatly missed by friends and family across Canada, England, New Zealand and Australia. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held in May on a date still to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Riverdale Share Community Association’s ‘Thundercloud Fund’. See www.riverdaleshare.com for details.
